The Dorn Method

The Dorn Method is a revolutionary gentle manual therapy for back and joint pain. It is used to correct misalignments of the spine and other joints. The techniques used in this method avoid clicking and crunching, heavy forces, sudden thrust moves or jerky manipulation. Instead the client works with the therapist by means of swinging a leg or their arms and by using this dynamic motion the therapist is able to apply corrections which help joints and vertebrae to slip back into their natural positions.

The Dorn Method can help with injuries to the back and joints and can be used on the following health problems:

  • Back pain whether lower back pain, mid back pain or upper back pain.
  • Neck pain
  • Joint problems such as Ankle, Knee, Hip, Wrist, Elbow, Shoulder and the Jaw.
  • Leg length difference.

Due to the gentle and safe nature of this method, it can be used to treat all ages from babies through to the elderly and can be used on those with replacement knee and hip joints.

Even if you don’t have any pain, a Dorn treatment is an excellent way to ensure that you are in alignment as through everyday life if you sit cross legged, lift heavy objects, carry heavy bags and have trips and falls this could pull vertebrae more easily out of place and lead to extra strain on the muscles and joints which in time could lead to back pain and other problems such as neck pain shoulder pain and headaches.

Also, women who have experienced childbirth, since during pregnancy your body is put out of alignment and once the baby is born, most women have a tendency to carry their baby to one side, balancing baby on the same hip which can lead to additional strain on the muscles.

The Dorn Method is combined with a relaxing spinal massage called the Breuss Massage which stretches, nourishes and energises the back this is usually carried out at the end of the session so that you leave feeling very relaxed.

How many sessions are required?

There are no set number of sessions, in a high number of cases a single session can be sufficient but some may require two or three appointments. In the case of long term existing conditions, a number of sessions may be required over a number of months.  If you don’t like the cracking and crunching of forced movements then this is the treatment for you. As I mentioned earlier, the Dorn Method is also a good check-up treatment to ensure you are in alignment.

Pilates and Dorn – A Perfect Marriage

I took up pilates many years ago and loved it. Pilates made me think about how I use my body and how to maintain my posture to help prevent back pain and I’ve stuck by the principles every since.

Finding a good instructor is the key to learning pilates the correct way. You need to find a class which limits the number of attendees, for example you don’t really want more than 12 in a class as the teacher won’t be able to give you the attention you need.

You’ll learn that minute changes in how you hold or carry out a pilates move, will make a difference. You’ll also be able to apply what you’ve learnt in class to everyday use.

As I’ve continued on my journey learning different massage and therapies I’ve learnt to protect my body, especially my back when I use it.

This is one of the reasons I’m a big Dorn Method fan. This therapy can help put you back into alignment and since I also teach posture awareness and self-help exercises to help maintain balance in your body, it should make you consider how you are using your body.

Since pilates also teaches you about core stability and how to maintain it, this is why I think Dorn and Pilates are the perfect marriage.
